Taking the digital ACT in the U.S.? You can now use your own device

Written by Lisa Mayo | Jul 3, 2025 2:58:59 PM

If you're planning to take the ACT this year, you may know that the exam has undergone some major changes recently. The exam is now shorter, the Science section is optional, and the test is offered in both digital and paper formats.

ACT recently slipped in another, much less publicized but significant shift in testing policy: digital test-takers in the U.S. can now choose to bring their own device on test day. They merely need to install ACT’s secure testing app, ACT Gateway, in advance and run a device check. They are no longer required to use center-provided devices, whether or not they are testing with accommodations. Note,  though, that international students must still use a test center device.

What this means for test-takers

The new option to test on their own computers is good news for students who have been seeking to take the digital ACT but have been encountering seat shortages, which have been common of late. With seating no longer limited by the number of test center devices available, more test seats should begin to open up. Additionally, students are more likely to feel comfortable testing on their own familiar devices. However, students should be aware that logistical issues may arise more frequently, especially during the first few administrations.

Allowed devices

The ACT Gateway app is currently compatible with:

  • Windows laptops

  • Mac laptops

  • Chromebooks

At this time, iPads and tablets are not supported, so be sure to plan accordingly. If you're using a school-managed device, you'll need to reach out to your school to install the ACT Gateway app.

Required device readiness check

Before the test date, you must run a device check; otherwise, you will not be allowed to test. Each exam date has a cutoff date by which students must run the device check:

Stick with the paper exam if possible

ArborBridge still recommends taking the paper ACT when possible. While digital testing has its perks, many students perform better on paper, and the logistics of digital testing are still being worked out in real time.

That said, if you need or prefer the digital format, our test experts are ready to help with tutoring digital practice test options.
